He was determined to get back on the field as quickly as possible. Massey came to the training facility and rehabbed extra days, and replicated the workouts at home doing extra reps by himself.
He said being mentally strong has been key for him since the injury. He is well ahead of his rehab schedule, but admits it has been a process. "Whenever I touch the ball, I can score," he said. He still remains confident in his trademark speed and open-field allusiveness. Now, less than seven months after the injury, Massey says he has most of his speed back. The injury was just "another storm" for him to get through. Massey has endured many challenges in his life: junior college, people dying, having a hard time in school and moving a lot. "That was a big miss for us a year ago,'' McElwain said Monday. Instead the only stat he put up the whole season was one kickoff return for 21 yards. Florida head coach Jim McElwain had special packages to get him more touches. Massey was supposed to have a breakout season in 2016. Massey's first season with the Gators was cut short when he injured his knee on the opening kickoff in the season opener against UMass. He played through the injury and finished the half, but was then diagnosed with a torn ACL, ending his season before he was able to flash the playmaker ability that earned him a roster spot at Florida. While Massey continues to be limited by the team in spring practices, his words are a sign of confidence from the redshirt junior who transferred from Holmes Community College in January 2016.
